FOUND SOUND
My regular music links are to be found on my Eastern European site, Izvor, and my non-rock links page. If you are wondering what my favorite bands are, I have listed them on my About page.

Earth Songs
From the site: If humans had radio antennas instead of ears, we would hear a remarkable symphony of strange noises coming from our own planet. Scientists call them "tweeks," "whistlers" and "sferics." They sound like background music from a flamboyant science fiction film, but this is not science fiction.

Phonography Archive
This is a dumping ground for field recordings of daily life -- buzzing bees, rivers, trains, tap dancers, metro stations -- all of the ambient noise we usually take for granted. Anyone can upload. If you have a high-speed connection, it's a great place to spend 10-15 minutes and hear things from around the world that other people thought fascinating enough to record. It's the archive of Phonography, a resource center for those whose main recording source material are such field recordings.

Quiet American
This was the first site I stumbled onto, on the hunt for Fijian village music. It's the recordings of one man, on his trips around the world. There are field recordings, writings, links and advice, as well as other art projects. My favorite recording is from the Serendipity Machine. "Each machine produces an ever-changing stream of sounds by autonomously and randomly mixing source clips from a prepared libarary. A clip can be anything from a few seconds to several minutes long; several clips of silence are included. Each machine is built into an object appropriate to its sound sources." Such as an old suitcase. The recording has 3 - 5 sounds playing at any one time, and they drift in and out of each other -- children laughing, water flowing, Vietnamese street noise, old foreign phonographs...

ART
This section is about art. Go ahead, see for yourself.

Robert Parke-Harrison
One of my favorite photographers. Very old-timey and magical.

Raw Vision
My favorite art magazine, about my favorite type of art -- outsider or visionary art.

Wassily Kandinsky
A page with several high-quality paintings about this early 20th century Russian artist and founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) group in Germany. With little text, the site lets the art speak for itself.

Egon Schiele
Bio and images from this powerful Austrian artist.

Vollis Simpson's Whirligig Farm
Fantastic site on one of my favorite folk art environments, which I got to visit in January 2002.

Berlin Wall Web Photo Exhibition
Learn about the Wall.

Art Cars
Why would someone cover their car with old fashioned cameras or 100 album covers of "Whipped Cream and Other Delights?"

ENVIRONMENTAL STUFF
How to treat the earth and animals nicely, even if you're a jerk to your fellow humans.

Humane Farming Association
This group is dedicated to promoting the health and proper keeping of farm animals -- including hormone- and drug-free options, factory farming alternatives and animal kindness.

Gaia.org and the Global Ecovillage Network
Learn about ecovillages, find one in your area, and discover how to live in harmony with your environment. You dirty hippie.

Union of Concerned Scientists
From the site: UCS is an independent nonprofit alliance of more than 100,000 concerned citizens and scientists. We augment rigorous scientific analysis with innovative thinking and committed citizen advocacy to build a cleaner, healthier environment and a safer world.

SCIENCE
Non-boring science sites. I'm big on experimental physics and astronomy.

A Century of Physics Timeline
Pretty self-explanatory. Learn about the great events of 20th century physics.

Hubble Showcase
The most beautiful images from the Hubble telescope. I spent many an evening here when I first found the site. Amazing universe we live in. The best ones are the nebulae.

Solar Views
Information about and spectacular images of the solar system.

Bad Astronomy
This site, voted by Scientific American as one of the top 50 web sites of 2004, is devoted to debunking myths and falsehoods about astronomy. If you want to know why the sky is blue or if you really can spin an egg on its end during the Vernal Equinox, come hither. The site also answers pressing questions such as, "Can you build an elevator in space?" and "Why does a whoopee cushion make a noise?"

Cosmic Evolution
Follow the development of the universe in this informative, huge and high-tech site that includes about 30 quicktime videos.

Fear of Physics
Get explanations complete with example videos and graphics at this site, geared toward those who think physics is scary or boring. What does it look like to go through a house at 99.9% the speed of light? Why?

Understanding Evolution
An instructive site for all ages on the evidence for and theories of evolution. If you think the world was created in seven days, you may want to spend a few hours here.

RANDOM STUFF
Religion, philosophy, infantile ways to pass the time, it's all here.

Cacophony Society
"You may already be a member..."

Introduction to Hinduism
Next to Buddhism (and not too far from it at times), this is the religion that most closely mirrors my own philosophy of life. This page is taken from the Religious Tolerance web site, an extensive and informative site on many of the world's religions.

Ancient Egypt: The Mythology
An encyclopedia of sorts on Egyptian mythology.

Unmarried America / American Association for Single People
I'm not the only one, folks, as this organization and rights group can attest to.

Paul's Case by Willa Cather
This is one of my favorite short stories, about a boy in love with beauty and his futile fight to possess it.

Word Origins
Ever wondered what "three sheets to the wind" really means? The origins or words and phrases.

Boobah Zone
I have wasted *way* too much time here.

Dead Letter Office
Letters from the dead. What would you write? Add your own to the pile of nearly 6,000.

George W. Dress Up
Have a little fashion fun with W.

American Patriot Registration
Have you enlisted? If not, why do you hate America?
